## How Our Family Survived Hurricane Maria In Puerto Rico

Hurricane Maria was one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever hit Puerto Rico. The storm caused catastrophic damage to the island, and it took months for many families to recover. Our family was one of the many who were affected by the hurricane, and this is our story of how we survived.

### The Days Before the Hurricane

We live in the town of Caguas, which is located in the central part of Puerto Rico. In the days leading up to Hurricane Maria, we watched the news with growing concern. The storm was strengthening rapidly, and it was clear that it was going to be a major hurricane.

We started to prepare for the hurricane by gathering food, water, and other supplies. We also boarded up our windows and doors, and we filled our bathtub with water.

### The Hurricane

Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017. The storm brought with it winds of up to 155 miles per hour, and it dumped torrential rains on the island. Our house was hit hard by the hurricane. The roof was damaged, and several windows were blown out.

We spent the night huddled together in a small room in the center of our house. The wind howled outside, and the rain beat against the windows. We were terrified, but we knew that we had to stay strong for our children.

### The Aftermath of the Hurricane

The next morning, we emerged from our house to find a scene of devastation. The streets were flooded, and trees were uprooted. Our neighborhood was unrecognizable.

We spent the next few days cleaning up the damage to our house. We also helped our neighbors to clean up their homes. It was a difficult time, but we were grateful that we had survived the hurricane.

### The Long Road to Recovery

It took months for Puerto Rico to recover from Hurricane Maria. The power grid was down for months, and many people were without food and water. Our family was fortunate to have a generator, which allowed us to have power and water. However, we know that many families were not as fortunate as we were.

We are still recovering from the hurricane. Our house is still not fully repaired, and we are still dealing with the emotional scars of the storm. However, we are grateful to be alive, and we are determined to rebuild our lives.

### Lessons Learned

We learned a lot from Hurricane Maria. We learned that it is important to be prepared for hurricanes. We also learned that it is important to help others in times of need. Most importantly, we learned that family is the most important thing in the world.

We are grateful for the support that we received from our family, friends, and neighbors after Hurricane Maria. We are also grateful for the help that we received from the government and from FEMA. We know that we would not have been able to survive without their help.

### How You Can Help

There are still many families in Puerto Rico who are struggling to recover from Hurricane Maria. You can help them by donating to one of the many charities that are working to help the island. You can also volunteer your time to help with the cleanup and rebuilding effort.

Here are some ways that you can help:

* Donate to the American Red Cross * Donate to UNICEF * Donate to Save the Children * Donate to Mercy Corps * Donate to Habitat for Humanity

You can also volunteer your time to help with the cleanup and rebuilding effort. Here are some organizations that are looking for volunteers:

* Team Rubicon * All Hands Volunteers * Mission 22 * National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster * American Red Cross

We are grateful for your support. Together, we can help Puerto Rico rebuild.
