Buchan was born in Perth, Scotland, in 1875. He studied at the University of Oxford and then worked as a journalist and editor. In 1901, he published his first novel, Prester John. This was followed by a number of other novels, including The Thirty-Nine Steps (1915),Greenmantle (1916),and Mr Standfast (1919).

In addition to his novels, Buchan also wrote a number of historical works, including The History of the Great War (1921-1922) and The Life of Sir Walter Scott (1932). He also served as a Member of Parliament for the Scottish Universities from 1927 to 1935.

Buchan died in Montreal, Canada, in 1940. He is considered one of the most important British writers of the 20th century.

The Thirty-Nine Steps
