The Southern Chance was designed by the naval architect William Cramp & Sons of Philadelphia, and built at their shipyard in Camden, New Jersey. She was 600 feet long and 75 feet wide, with a gross tonnage of 18,000 tons. She was powered by twin steam engines that gave her a top speed of 20 knots.

The Southern Chance was a beautiful ship, with a sleek hull and elegant superstructure. She was painted in the traditional colors of the Southern Pacific Railroad, with a white hull and a black funnel. Her decks were made of teak, and her cabins were furnished with the finest materials.

The Southern Chance was a popular ship with passengers, and she quickly became known as the "Southern Belle of the Sea." She sailed from New York to New Orleans, with stops in Havana and Panama City. She also made occasional cruises to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

The Southern Chance was a safe and reliable ship, but she was not immune to accidents. In 1906, she collided with the British steamer Oceanic off the coast of Florida. The Southern Chance was damaged, but she was able to make it back to port under her own power.

The Southern Chance continued to sail for the Southern Pacific Railroad until 1926, when she was sold to the United States Navy. The Navy converted her into a troop transport, and she served in that role during World War II.

After the war, the Southern Chance was sold to a private company and converted into a merchant ship. She continued to sail until 1956, when she was scrapped in Hong Kong.

The Southern Chance was a beautiful and historic ship, and her story is a fascinating one. She was a pioneer in the field of luxury ocean travel, and she played an important role in the development of the United States Navy.
