The Southern Chance was designed by the naval architect William Cramp & Sons of Philadelphia, and built at their shipyard in Camden, New Jersey. She was 600 feet long and 75 feet wide, with a gross tonnage of 18,000 tons. She was powered by twin steam engines that gave her a top speed of 20 knots.
The Southern Chance was a beautiful ship, with a sleek hull and elegant superstructure. She was painted in the traditional colors of the Southern Pacific Railroad, with a white hull and a black funnel. Her decks were made of teak, and her cabins were furnished with the finest materials.
